NextEra Energy Transmission, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc., along with the New Mexico Renewable Energy Transmission Authority (RETA), has announced the successful energization of a major transmission project in New Mexico. The project is a 137-mile, 345-kilovolt transmission line known as the Crossroads–Hobbs–Roadrunner Transmission Line.
The line runs across Roosevelt and Lea counties in New Mexico and is designed to significantly strengthen the regional electricity grid. It improves the movement of power between key substations and helps ensure a more stable and reliable supply of electricity for homes, businesses, and industries across the region.
This becomes especially important as electricity demand continues to grow in the area.A major benefit of the project is improved affordability. It is expected to expand access to lower-cost energy and reduce average residential electricity bills by about 13 dollars per month. In addition to cost savings, the project supports long-term economic development by enabling more reliable infrastructure for future industrial and commercial growth in the region.
The project was completed ahead of schedule, marking a strong execution milestone. It also extends NextEra Energy Transmission’s track record, becoming the third consecutive transmission project completed on time and within budget for the Southwest Power Pool grid. For RETA, it represents the second of three major transmission projects facilitated since 2021 aimed at strengthening New Mexico’s power network.
Matt Valle, president of NextEra Energy Transmission, said the project demonstrates what can be achieved when developers, communities, and stakeholders work together effectively. He emphasized that rising electricity demand requires faster development of reliable and affordable energy infrastructure, and this project is an example of that progress.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham highlighted that the project supports New Mexico’s broader goals of economic growth, job creation, and affordable energy for residents. She noted that investments in transmission infrastructure like this help build a stronger and more resilient state economy.State Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard pointed out that the project also reflects a balance between infrastructure development and environmental protection.
As part of the initiative, around 40 square miles of land have been set aside to preserve habitat for the lesser prairie chicken, ensuring that conservation efforts continue alongside energy expansion.Lynn Mostoller, Executive Director of the New Mexico Renewable Energy Transmission Authority, explained that RETA was created to unlock New Mexico’s renewable energy potential by expanding transmission capacity.
She described the Crossroads project as a successful example of this mission being carried out from planning to completion within five years.Overall, the Crossroads–Hobbs–Roadrunner Transmission Line represents a significant upgrade to New Mexico’s energy infrastructure. It improves grid reliability, lowers electricity costs, supports economic development, and also incorporates environmental conservation efforts, making it an important milestone for the region.
