BHEL Partners With thyssenkrupp nucera India To Boost Green Hydrogen Manufacturing

State-owned engineering company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) with thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited to support the growth of India’s green hydrogen sector. The collaboration, announced on July 7, 2026, is focused on developing and manufacturing Alkaline Electrolyser Systems, a key technology used to produce green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water using renewable electricity.

The partnership aims to address the increasing demand for green hydrogen projects across India. By combining their expertise, BHEL and thyssenkrupp nucera India plan to strengthen the domestic supply chain for electrolyser systems and support the country’s clean energy transition. Although the financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, the collaboration is expected to be a long-term strategic initiative.

A major focus of the agreement is the phased indigenization of Alkaline Electrolyser Systems. This means that more components and manufacturing processes will gradually be shifted to India, reducing dependence on imported technology. Local production is expected to improve the availability of advanced electrolyser systems while helping develop a stronger domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

For BHEL, the collaboration is expected to enhance its capabilities in executing large-scale green hydrogen projects. With increasing interest in green hydrogen from industries such as refining, steel, fertilizers, and heavy transport, the company aims to play a larger role in delivering clean energy solutions for the country.

The partnership also supports India’s broader sustainability goals. It aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen. At the same time, it complements the government’s Make in India initiative by encouraging local manufacturing of advanced clean energy technologies.

As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions, collaborations such as this are expected to accelerate technology development, strengthen domestic capabilities, and create a more self-reliant green energy ecosystem. The agreement represents another important step in advancing India’s long-term clean energy ambitions.
