L&T Secures Major Order For 6 GWh Battery Energy Storage Projects In Middle East

Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Renewables business has secured a major order from a prominent client in the Middle East to develop three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The combined projects will provide 6 GWh of energy storage capacity, strengthening the region’s efforts to modernise its power grids and integrate a growing share of renewable energy.

The scope of the order extends beyond the battery storage facilities and includes associated grid interconnection infrastructure. This comprises pooling substations and underground cable systems required to connect the BESS projects to the grid.

Each of the three projects will feature a four-hour BESS configuration, enabling the systems to store electricity and dispatch it when required. The projects are expected to support grid stability while improving the utilisation of renewable energy. By shifting electricity from periods of lower demand to peak-demand hours, the storage systems can help manage fluctuations in renewable generation and improve the reliability of power supply.

The BESS installations will incorporate liquid cooling technology. This technology is designed to improve thermal management and safety while supporting higher power density and longer operational life. Such capabilities are increasingly important as large-scale battery storage projects become an integral part of modern electricity networks.

The projects will require L&T to meet stringent requirements related to plant performance, safety, quality, workforce mobilisation and project execution timelines. The company said the order reflects the continued confidence of its customers in its engineering capabilities and project management expertise.

With the Middle East rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity and investing in grid-scale storage, the order further strengthens L&T’s position in the region’s energy storage market. Large BESS projects are gaining importance as countries seek to balance renewable generation with electricity demand and enhance grid flexibility.

L&T is an Indian multinational with operations spanning engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), hi-tech manufacturing, products and services across multiple sectors and geographies. The company has increasingly focused on renewable energy, energy storage and technology-led infrastructure as part of its broader business strategy.

Under L&T’s order classification, contracts valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore are categorised as “Major” orders. The company classifies orders into Significant, Large, Major, Mega and Ultra-Mega categories based on their value.
