Energy storage is becoming a critical part of the United States’ clean energy transition, helping the power grid store electricity when renewable generation is high and deliver it when demand increases. According to insights from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), large-scale battery storage is playing an increasingly important role in supporting solar and wind power and improving grid reliability.
California is currently the leading state for energy storage deployment in the US. The state’s strong clean energy policies, growing renewable generation and need for greater grid reliability have accelerated battery installations. Storage systems allow California to capture excess solar electricity during the day and supply power during the evening, when solar generation falls and demand rises. Batteries also help the state manage grid pressures during extreme weather conditions.

Texas is another major energy storage market. The state has rapidly expanded its solar and wind capacity, creating a growing need for flexible resources that can balance changes in electricity generation. Grid-scale batteries are increasingly being deployed to support the state’s independent power system and improve reliability during periods of extreme heat, winter storms and sudden changes in renewable output.
Florida has also emerged as a significant market for large-scale energy storage. Utilities are pairing battery systems with expanding solar projects to improve grid performance and manage electricity demand during peak periods. Storage allows solar power generated during the day to remain available after sunset, supporting greater use of renewable electricity.
Nevada is expanding energy storage alongside its large-scale solar development. Battery systems connected with solar projects can provide a more consistent supply of electricity while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuel generation. The approach is supporting Nevada’s renewable energy ambitions and helping meet the electricity needs of its growing population.

New York rounds out the five leading states. Strong state policies and energy storage targets are driving investment, with storage expected to support the replacement of older fossil-fuel power plants and help integrate future offshore wind generation.
Together, these states highlight the growing role of battery storage in building a cleaner and more reliable US power system. Falling technology costs, rising electricity demand and continued renewable energy growth are expected to drive further deployment across the country.
