Trina Storage, the utility-scale energy storage business of Trinasolar, has been selected to supply the battery energy storage system (BESS) for Stage One of Frontier Energy’s Waroona Renewable Energy Project in Western Australia.
Located approximately 120 kilometres south of Perth, Waroona Stage One will comprise a 132 MW solar facility paired with an 81.5 MW / 6.9-hour BESS. The project is among the larger solar and battery hybrid developments planned for Western Australia’s main electricity grid, with first generation scheduled for 2028.
Trina Storage will supply its Elementa utility-scale DC solution, featuring lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells manufactured at Trina’s Changzhou battery plant. The Elementa platform incorporates liquid cooling technology along with multiple safety systems, including heat, gas and smoke detection and active fire protection.
The project will use a DC-coupled architecture, integrating the solar generation and battery storage systems. According to Trina Storage, the configuration adds complexity to the project design and requires close coordination between the solar and storage systems.
Warrick Stapleton, Head of Sales, APAC, Trina Storage, said the company worked closely with Frontier Energy during the procurement process to understand the project requirements and demonstrate how its technology could support the development.
He added that as Western Australia continues its energy transition, projects such as Waroona could contribute dispatchable capacity to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).
Trina Storage’s agreement for Stage One includes a 20-year warranty and performance guarantees, intended to support long-term asset performance and the project’s financing requirements.
Adam Kiley, Chief Executive Officer of Frontier Energy, said Waroona Energy Park is designed to support Western Australia’s energy transition through an integrated solar and battery strategy. He added that Stage One represents the foundation of the company’s broader plans for the project.
The Waroona project forms part of Frontier Energy’s longer-term development plans, with future stages expected to expand the project to approximately 1,000 MW of generation capacity and up to 660 MW of battery storage capacity.
