Sarawak is developing an Artificial Intelligence Grid (AI Grid) that will connect computing resources with the state’s renewable energy capacity. The initiative is aimed at building a strong foundation for the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure in Sarawak.
The development is part of Sarawak’s wider plan to move from AI strategy and planning towards building infrastructure and practical applications. The state government is focusing on creating the infrastructure needed to support the growing demand for AI across different sectors.
Renewable energy is expected to play an important role in the AI Grid. As AI systems require large amounts of computing power, they also need reliable and sufficient electricity. Sarawak plans to use its renewable energy resources to support the expansion of digital infrastructure and AI-related activities.
The AI Grid is being developed to link available computing resources across the state while making use of Sarawak’s renewable energy capacity. This approach is expected to support long-term growth in AI while keeping clean energy as an important part of the state’s digital development.
The development of the Kuching AI Data Campus at Tanjung Embang will provide physical infrastructure for the AI Grid. The campus is also expected to help attract investment, strengthen the data centre ecosystem and support businesses working with AI technologies.
The combination of the AI Data Campus and AI Grid represents a move towards building practical digital infrastructure rather than focusing only on technology plans. The infrastructure is expected to support AI applications in government, business and other sectors.
Sarawak is also developing ADAM AI for the Sarawak Public Service. The system is designed to support government work by using approved information for policy analysis, document preparation, scenario assessment and decision-making. The initiative demonstrates how AI can be applied to improve public sector operations.
The state government also sees opportunities to extend AI applications to different industries based on Sarawak’s needs and strengths. However, the development of AI will require more than computing infrastructure and energy.
Sarawak is working to build an ecosystem that connects infrastructure, skilled workers, research institutions, industries, investors and markets. Researchers are expected to develop new ideas, while companies can test and commercialise these ideas. Investors can then support business growth and help products and services reach markets outside Sarawak.
The approach highlights the importance of combining renewable energy with digital infrastructure and innovation. By connecting clean power, computing capacity, research, investment and market access, Sarawak aims to build a stronger AI ecosystem and create new economic opportunities for the state.
