EDF And Anglo American Commission 520 MW Koruson 2 Renewable Energy Cluster in South Africa

Envusa Energy, a joint venture between EDF power solutions and Anglo American, has completed the commissioning of its 520 MW Koruson 2 renewable energy cluster in South Africa in October 2026. The development marks a significant milestone in the country’s energy transition and highlights the growing role of private-sector partnerships in expanding renewable energy capacity and supplying clean electricity to energy-intensive industries.

Koruson 2 comprises three renewable energy projects, including the 240 MW Mooi Plaats solar park and two wind farms, Umsobomvu and Hartebeesthoek, each with an installed capacity of 140 MW. The cluster is the first project of its kind in South Africa to be developed through a private renewable energy platform. Its electricity is supplied to multiple industrial consumers through Eskom’s national transmission grid, demonstrating how private-sector renewable energy projects can support industrial decarbonization.

The project operates under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), providing revenue certainty over its operating period. Its financing structure includes 85% debt funding provided by local banks, reflecting the participation of South Africa’s domestic financial institutions in supporting large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

Koruson 2 has also been structured to deliver economic and social benefits to surrounding communities while supporting black economic empowerment objectives. Pele Green Energy, a South African independent power producer, holds a 20% equity stake in each of the three project companies. In addition, a Community Trust has been established to ensure that local communities directly benefit from the financial returns generated throughout the 20-year operating life of each renewable energy asset.

Envusa Energy was established through the partnership between EDF power solutions and Anglo American to develop and supply renewable energy solutions to energy-intensive sectors in South Africa. These include mining companies, particularly platinum and iron ore producers, as well as other industrial consumers seeking to reduce their carbon emissions and improve energy sustainability.

EDF power solutions has been operating in South Africa since 2009 and continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio in the country. The company expects to reach 1.5 GW of installed operational capacity in South Africa by 2027. Its portfolio will include wind and solar power projects, battery energy storage systems and other innovative energy solutions.

Commenting on the commissioning, Tristan de Drouas, Vice President Southern Africa at EDF power solutions, said the successful completion of Koruson 2 demonstrates how large-scale renewable corporate PPA projects can support the decarbonization of the mining industry while accelerating South Africa’s energy transition.

The commissioning of Koruson 2 strengthens the role of corporate renewable energy procurement in South Africa, demonstrating how private investment, long-term PPAs and grid infrastructure can work together to deliver large-scale clean energy solutions for industrial consumers.
