Singapore Sets 4 GWp Solar Capacity Target By 2035 To Accelerate Clean Energy Transition

Singapore has strengthened its renewable energy ambitions by setting a new target to achieve 4 gigawatts-peak (GWp) of cumulative solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity by 2035. The target reflects the country’s growing focus on expanding clean energy generation and reducing carbon emissions despite its limited land availability. The latest objective also represents a significant step in Singapore’s efforts to accelerate its energy transition and increase the contribution of solar power to its electricity supply.

The new target was highlighted during regional energy discussions, where officials outlined the country’s approach to expanding solar deployment across its urban landscape. Given Singapore’s geographical limitations and high population density, the government is focusing on making better use of existing infrastructure and available surfaces for solar installations. Rather than depending on large ground-mounted solar parks, the country is exploring opportunities to integrate photovoltaic systems into buildings, industrial facilities and other urban structures.

Rooftop solar installations are expected to remain a major contributor to Singapore’s solar capacity expansion. Residential buildings, commercial properties and industrial facilities offer significant opportunities for deploying additional solar panels. Authorities are also encouraging the use of innovative installation methods to increase solar generation without requiring additional land.

Among the approaches being explored are specialized overhang solar arrays on industrial infrastructure and building-integrated photovoltaic systems installed on building facades. These solutions are intended to make productive use of surfaces that are traditionally not considered for electricity generation. By incorporating solar technology into existing infrastructure, Singapore aims to maximize its available space while supporting the expansion of renewable energy.

Alongside infrastructure development, the government is working on measures to support the achievement of the 2035 target. These include improvements in electricity grid planning, regulatory frameworks and targeted incentives for residential and commercial solar adopters. Modernizing the electricity network will be important for accommodating higher levels of distributed solar generation and maintaining grid reliability as renewable energy capacity increases.

The government is also looking to create a more supportive environment for solar deployment by improving regulatory processes and encouraging wider participation from businesses and property owners. These efforts are expected to support investment in solar technologies and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy across different sectors.

Singapore’s latest solar target forms part of its broader long-term sustainability strategy. The country is working to reduce the carbon intensity of its domestic power supply while strengthening energy security and supporting regional clean energy development.

In addition to expanding local solar generation, Singapore is exploring regional electricity cooperation and cross-border power-sharing initiatives to access more renewable energy. The combination of domestic solar deployment, infrastructure innovation and regional energy partnerships is expected to play an important role in its transition towards a more resilient and low-carbon energy system by 2035.
