Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) researchers have developed a new high-efficiency power converter using gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors, a breakthrough that could help meet the growing energy and infrastructure demands of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers while improving power management systems across the energy sector.

Power converters are essential electronic devices that regulate and transform electrical current and voltage, enabling efficient power flow between energy sources, equipment and end users. Traditionally, these systems rely on silicon semiconductors. However, GaN semiconductors offer significantly faster switching speeds and lower energy losses, making them increasingly attractive for next-generation energy applications.

The ORNL team incorporated GaN semiconductors supplied by ROHM Semiconductor into converter systems developed at the laboratory’s Grid Research Innovation and Development Center (GRID-C). According to the researchers, the new converters can switch 10 to 20 times faster than conventional silicon-based devices while reducing energy losses during operation.

The compact design of the converter is another major advantage. Smaller and lighter systems can lower transportation, installation and maintenance costs while enabling more flexible infrastructure deployment for large-scale facilities.

The technology is particularly relevant for AI data centers, which are rapidly emerging as major electricity consumers globally. ORNL researcher Prasad Kandula noted that modern AI servers may require multiple power converters per unit, with enterprise-scale facilities deploying hundreds or even thousands of servers. In such environments, improvements in size, efficiency and thermal performance can significantly reduce operational costs and energy consumption.

Beyond AI infrastructure, GaN-based power electronics are also gaining traction in renewable energy systems, battery storage, EV charging infrastructure and smart grid applications due to their higher efficiency and reduced heat generation.

The development reflects a broader industry shift toward advanced semiconductor technologies that can support increasingly power-intensive digital and clean energy ecosystems.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the project was conducted at GRID-C, a specialized research platform focused on grid systems integration, energy storage and advanced power technologies.

The Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) has officially closed a petition filed by Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd (RVPN) seeking approval for nine new electricity transmission schemes proposed across the state. The petition, registered as Petition No. 2355/2025, was related to projects announced during the Rajasthan State Budget and appropriation discussions earlier in 2025.

RVPN had approached the commission requesting approval for an initial expenditure of Rs. 30 crore for the financial year 2025-26. According to the utility, this amount was meant for preliminary works such as surveys, land identification, and other early-stage activities required before the execution of the transmission projects. The company clarified that the proposed spending would remain within the already approved investment plan limit of Rs. 5,073 crore for the year.

The proposed transmission schemes included the construction and upgradation of Grid Sub-Stations (GSS) and associated transmission infrastructure in several districts of Rajasthan. These districts included Sawai Madhopur, Kota, Jaisalmer, Dausa, Baran, Jhunjhunu, Barmer, Bhilwara, and Jaipur. The projects were aimed at strengthening the state’s transmission network and supporting future power demand growth.

Apart from seeking approval for the initial expenditure, RVPN also requested permission from the commission under Section 17 of the Electricity Act, 2003, to hypothecate assets for securing loans from commercial banks and financial institutions. The proposed borrowing amount was estimated at nearly Rs. 92,311.34 lakh.

The matter was heard by a commission bench comprising Chairman Dr. Rajesh Sharma and Member Hemant Kumar Jain. During the regulatory process, the commission directed the publication of public notices in leading newspapers such as Times of India, Dainik Bhaskar, and Rajasthan Patrika to invite comments and objections from stakeholders and the public.

Several stakeholders participated in the proceedings. Sh. G.L. Sharma and Rajasthan Urja Vikas & IT Services Ltd (RUVITL) submitted replies and written arguments before the commission. However, some other concerned entities, including Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, did not file any comments or objections.

After examining the matter, the commission concluded that no separate order was required in the petition. The RERC observed that the same nine schemes had already been considered in detail under another petition, numbered 2375/2025, which was related to RVPN’s investment plan for the financial year 2026-27. Since the projects had already been addressed in that separate proceeding, the commission considered the current petition unnecessary.

The commission also pointed out that the financial year 2025-26 had already ended by the time the order was finalized. As a result, the proposed preliminary expenditure could no longer be incurred within the specified period. Considering these factors, the RERC declared the petition infructuous and formally disposed of the matter.

Solfin Raises ₹280 Crore, Accelerating India’s Energy Transition

1

Solfin Sustainable Finance has raised ₹280 crore in a recently closed round and turned profitable within its first full year of operations a rare combination for an early-stage NBFC, and a signal of the structural demand now reshaping how India finances its energy future.

Solfin was founded on a single conviction: India’s shift away from fossil fuels will be one of the defining economic transitions of the next two decades, and it will not happen at scale without purpose-built financing. The company’s vision is to make clean energy the default choice for every Indian household, business, and community by removing the financial friction that today slows adoption.

That vision is meeting its moment. India has committed to 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. Rooftop solar economics have crossed grid parity in most states, residential schemes such as PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana have brought millions of households into the addressable market, and rising commercial tariffs are pushing businesses to lock in long-term energy-cost certainty.

Together, policy, economics, and consumer demand are converging into a multi-decade adoption curve, with distributed solar at its centre. The constraint is no longer technology or willingness it is access to fast, well-priced capital and a trusted network to deliver it.

This is where Solfin is built to win. Its proprietary underwriting engine and digital-first operating model have compressed residential loan approvals from weeks to days and brought complex C&I financing turnaround times down to single digits without compromising portfolio quality.

A distribution model anchored by partnerships with EPCs, dealers, OEMs, and manufacturers, including Waaree Energies, has scaled the platform to more than 1,200 partners and expanded clean-energy access deep into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

“India’s energy transition is the largest infrastructure opportunity of our generation, but it will only move at the speed of its financing,” said Gautam Kaushik and Pramod Mahanta, Co-Founders of Solfin. “We built Solfin to remove the friction from that financing so that a homeowner in a Tier 3 town, a factory owner in an industrial cluster, and a national EPC can all access capital on the same fast, transparent, technology-led terms.”

The fresh capital will fund deeper investments in AI-driven credit models, portfolio monitoring and collections, geographic expansion into underpenetrated states, new green-financing products, and entry into adjacent customer segments.

Iberdrola Chairman Ignacio Galán Emphasises Electrification As Key To Europe’s Industrial Growth At The European Round Table For Industry Plenary In Gothenburg

0

Iberdrola’s Executive Chairman, Ignacio Galán, participated in the plenary meeting of the European Round Table for Industry (ERT) held in Gothenburg, Sweden, a session that also featured contributions from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At the meeting, Ignacio Galán emphasised that electrification is not only essential for achieving climate objectives but is also a major catalyst for industrial development and long-term competitiveness. He noted that Europe’s ability to build a more resilient and efficient energy system depends heavily on accelerating the deployment of clean energy and reinforcing the infrastructure that supports it. According to him, the modernisation and expansion of electricity grids, cross-border interconnections, and energy transport capacity will be central to supporting both economic growth and Europe’s strategic autonomy.

Galán also acknowledged recent progress in European Union energy policy, particularly measures aimed at accelerating the energy transition. However, he stressed that further action is still required to maintain momentum. He called for stronger and more coordinated investments in grid infrastructure and urged policymakers to simplify administrative procedures that currently slow down the rollout of renewable energy and electrification projects.

Stability and predictability in regulation, he noted, remain fundamental to attracting large-scale investment from industry. The plenary discussions focused broadly on how the current global energy environment is shaping Europe’s competitiveness and industrial strategy. Participants examined the pressures facing European industry, the evolution of the EU’s competitiveness agenda, and the structural changes required to maintain leadership in a fast-shifting global landscape.

Another key theme was the role of artificial intelligence in accelerating industrial transformation, improving productivity, and enabling more efficient energy systems. This meeting followed a preparatory session that Iberdrola hosted just a month earlier at its headquarters in Bilbao. During that gathering, senior executives and advisers worked on shaping the agenda for the Sweden plenary, reflecting the company’s active role in contributing to Europe’s long-term industrial and energy strategy.T

he European Round Table for Industry, founded in 1983 and headquartered in Brussels, is a leading business forum bringing together around 60 chairmen and chief executive officers from major European companies committed to sustainable, competitive and globally influential industrial growth.

Collectively, these companies generate around €3 trillion in annual revenue, employ over 6 million people worldwide and invest roughly €120 billion each year in research, development and innovation. Through its collaborative efforts, the ERT helps shape policy discussions aimed at strengthening Europe’s economic prospects while advancing sustainability and technological leadership.

European Bank For Reconstruction And Development Highlights Bulgaria’s Plan To Source Nearly Half Its Electricity From Renewables By 2030 In New Green Future Video

0

The video published by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development presents a clear picture of how Bulgaria is accelerating its clean-energy transition and how the Bank is supporting this shift. As shown in the film, Bulgaria is entering a decisive stage in reshaping its energy system, guided by European climate objectives and national plans that aim to gradually reduce reliance on coal while increasing the share of electricity generated from renewable sources.

The video underscores that this transition is not only an environmental necessity but also an opportunity for economic renewal, new investment and stronger long-term energy security. The narrative highlights that Bulgaria is working to significantly expand its renewable capacity by 2030, aligning with EU climate frameworks while addressing its own structural needs.

The country has already made progress in deploying solar and wind power, but the next phase requires coordinated investment in grid modernisation, flexible backup technologies and storage solutions. According to the video, this is where the EBRD’s role becomes particularly strategic. The EBRD explains that its recent investments—amounting to roughly €673 million between 2022 and 2025—have been directed toward strengthening Bulgaria’s ability to handle larger volumes of green electricity.

These investments include support for renewable energy developers, financing for modernising electricity networks and backing for projects that improve energy efficiency across different sectors of the economy. Part of this financing is complemented by instruments such as the InvestEU guarantee mechanism, which helps mobilise additional private capital by reducing investor risk.

Together, these measures expand the pool of available funding for projects that can accelerate Bulgaria’s energy transition.A key message in the video is the growing importance of battery energy storage systems for Bulgaria’s electricity system. The EBRD notes that as the share of solar and wind generation rises, storage becomes essential for maintaining system stability, reducing curtailment and ensuring that renewable power can be delivered reliably through day–night fluctuations and seasonal variations.

The Bank has therefore been assisting Bulgarian authorities and market operators in expanding grid-scale storage capacity, helping the country create the conditions needed for large-scale renewable integration. This includes support in technical design, regulatory alignment, and investment frameworks that can attract both domestic and international developers. The film also emphasises how the EBRD works closely with government institutions, local municipalities, private investors and energy companies to build a balanced ecosystem for Bulgaria’s green transformation.

This collaboration includes improving permitting processes, aligning market rules with EU standards, and working to remove bottlenecks that often slow down renewable and grid-related projects. By strengthening these institutional foundations, the Bank aims to ensure that investments have long-term resilience and measurable impact.Beyond energy generation and storage, the video touches on broader transition themes such as boosting competitiveness, encouraging innovation in clean-technology sectors and supporting the creation of new economic opportunities in regions undergoing structural change.

This includes areas historically dependent on coal, where support for new industries, skills development and sustainable infrastructure forms part of a more inclusive transition.Overall, Building Bulgaria’s Green Future presents a clear message: Bulgaria’s path to a clean-energy future is already underway, but accelerating progress requires large-scale investment, modern infrastructure, flexible energy systems and strong institutional partnerships. With its mix of financing, technical support and policy engagement, the EBRD positions itself as a central partner in helping Bulgaria realise a greener, more secure and economically robust energy system.

IFC and EDF Sign $40 Million Deal to Expand Off-Grid Solar Access Across Africa

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and EDF Power Solutions have signed a $40 million financing agreement to expand off-grid solar energy access across Africa. The initiative is aimed at bringing clean and affordable electricity to homes and small businesses in remote areas where building traditional power grids is costly and difficult. The project will mainly support pay-as-you-go solar systems, allowing users to buy solar equipment through affordable monthly payments instead of high upfront costs.

The new program is expected to improve the lives of thousands of families and small business owners who currently depend on expensive diesel generators or harmful biomass fuels for energy needs. Through this model, households will gain access to lighting, mobile charging, and other basic electricity services, while local businesses can extend working hours and improve productivity.

The financing is part of the broader Mission 300 initiative launched jointly by the World Bank and the African Development Bank. The mission aims to provide electricity access to 300 million people in Africa by the year 2030. Despite ongoing efforts, nearly 600 million people across the continent still live without electricity, creating major challenges for healthcare, education, and economic growth.

To support such large-scale energy projects, international development finance institutions are increasingly using blended finance models. This approach combines public development funds with private investment to reduce financial risks for commercial investors. Experts believe this strategy is important because many African governments are facing high debt levels and are unable to independently finance large national power infrastructure projects.

Along with the EDF partnership, IFC also plans to invest another $40 million in the Facility for Energy Inclusion, a fund focused on supporting mini-grids and independent renewable energy projects across Africa. These investments are expected to strengthen clean energy development while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Industry observers say off-grid solar systems are becoming an important solution for improving energy access in rural regions. Besides supporting environmental goals, these systems also encourage financial inclusion by helping rural families use secure digital payment services. However, experts note that long-term success will depend on stable government policies, reliable local currencies, and continued support for private sector participation in Africa’s energy sector.
