San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is ready to begin the operation of a 690 MW battery storage facility. SMC anticipates completing 31 energy storage systems in 2022 with a total of 1 GW capacity.

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is one of the Philippines’ largest and most diversified conglomerates, with revenues equivalent to about 4% of the country’s GDP in 2020. SMC today has highly integrated operations with ownership in market-leading businesses and investments in various sectors, such as beverages, food, packaging, energy, fuel and oil, infrastructure, property development, etc.

SMC announced last year that its battery storage portfolio is around completion in the country. The company planned to produce around 3 GW of renewable energy. The company is working on a solar plant combined with battery storage across 10 locations in the Philippines.

In 2021, Fluence with SMC commissioned two 20MW/20MWh batteries which will supply power to SMC Global Power out of an energy storage portfolio of 470MW/470MWh and the project sites were between 20 to 60 MW capacity. Wartsila also commissioned its first two storage projects in May 2021 with 20MW/20MWh and 40MW/40MWh capacity or SMC Global Power.

To meet the needs of the Philippines, SMC intends to focus on solar, hydroelectric power plants, and liquefied natural gas for affordable and reliable power. SMC also plans to have 3 new coal power plants with clean and renewable energy sources of 1500 MW capacity.
