The Central Electricity Board (CEB) of Mauritius has launched two different tenders for the deployment of solar-plus-storage systems with a combined capacity of 140 MWp. The authorities have not yet disclosed the separate capacity of the storage systems in the two projects.

The CEB of Mauritius, operating under the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, issued the two procurement calls for renewable energy in the form of a request for proposals (RFP). The first tender covers the development, financing, and implementation of a 100 MW solar project, under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). Interested bidders can apply until June 22, 2022.

The second tender relates to the procurement of power from a 40 MW renewable hybrid facility comprising a solar and battery energy storage system. Interested independent power producers are required to submit their bids before June 15, 2022.

The tender is open to all global bidders eligible as per the criteria set by the CEB.

The calls for expression of interest for the two separate solar-plus-storage capacities are in line with Mauritius’ objective of increasing the share of renewable energy in its power generation mix. The Government of Mauritius is planning to increase the use of renewable energy from the current level of around 22%, to 35% by 2025 and to 60% by 2030.

The total installed capacity of Mauritius is nearly 876 MW, of which 498 MW is produced by the CEB and the rest by IPPs.

Over 80% of the total electricity is produced from oil and coal-fired power plants. Through these two renewable energy projects, the archipelago country in East Africa looks to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. The country also has hydro-power facilities, capable of generating 60 MW.
