Jordan’s Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Soud, has announced the commencement of the commercial operation of a 24-megawatt photovoltaic solar-power project in the Disi area.
This initiative, the first of its kind in the water sector, is part of a larger 33-megawatt solar-power project designed to reduce electricity costs by 70% at the Zay water treatment plant and 30% at the Wadi Al Arab water treatment plant.
The project is expected to generate 79 GWh of energy in its first year, thanks to advanced solar technology, including bi-facial solar panels and single-axis-tracker systems.
The European Union has provided a 30-million-euro grant to fund this project, which will increase Jordan’s renewable energy contribution by 2.5% while supporting water services.
