Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to spearhead advancements in renewable energy storage, responding to the increasing reliance on clean sources like solar power. With a focus on cutting-edge technologies, DEWA’s initiatives range from the world’s largest solar park to innovative green hydrogen projects and experimental battery storage systems.
In adherence to the visionary directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, DEWA CEO HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer outlines plans for a comprehensive energy storage system using electric batteries at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This aligns with Dubai’s ambitious clean energy goals, aiming for 100% reliance on clean energy sources by 2050.
One of DEWA’s flagship projects, the 950MW fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, stands as the world’s largest single-site solar park. Combining hybrid technologies, including a solar power tower and photovoltaic solar panels, this initiative reduces carbon emissions by 1.6 million tonnes annually, marking a significant stride towards sustainable energy.
DEWA’s commitment extends to groundbreaking pumped-storage hydroelectric power plants, exemplified by the Hatta Dam project. Designed for efficiency, the 250MW station boasts a rapid 90-second response to electricity demand and a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh.
The innovative Green Hydrogen Project at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park further demonstrates DEWA’s pioneering efforts. Producing 400 kilograms of green hydrogen daily, the project showcases the potential for renewable energy storage and its applications, including fuelling ENOC Group’s green hydrogen station at Expo City Dubai.
DEWA’s endeavors also encompass experimental systems for energy storage using batteries. A recent patent filing reveals an inventive method to enhance the performance of electrodes in lithium-ion batteries, reinforcing DEWA’s commitment to sustainable energy production and storage.
As DEWA continues to lead the way in clean energy solutions, these initiatives underscore Dubai’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its pivotal role in global efforts to combat climate change.
