Nxtra by Airtel Expands Renewable Energy Acquisition for Data Centers by 140,208 MWh

Nxtra by Airtel, a leading data center company in India, has announced a power-wheeling agreement with Ampln and Amplus Energy to procure an additional 140,208 MWh of renewable energy. This move further solidifies Nxtra’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through renewable energy sources annually by approximately 99,547 tCO2e.

Under this agreement, AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will establish captive solar and wind power plants of 48 MWdc and 24.3 MW, respectively, for Nxtraโ€™s data centers located in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. These 25-year agreements align with Nxtraโ€™s objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2031 and reinforce its position as Indiaโ€™s largest chain of green data centers.

In addition to these initiatives, Nxtra is actively working towards reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its operations by 100% by FY2031. This includes accelerating the adoption of green energy, implementing energy-efficient infrastructure and processes, and incorporating sustainable business practices at its workplaces.

Ashish Arora, CEO of Nxtra by Airtel, expressed, โ€œThese new partnerships underscore our commitment to leading Indiaโ€™s green data center sector and achieving our Net Zero emission goal by 2031. The increased supply of clean energy will elevate our renewable energy share to approximately 70% in our core data center’s overall energy mix. As we continue to expand our capacity and prepare for Generative AI-powered loads, we remain fully committed to mitigating our impact on the environment.โ€

The agreement details are as follows:

  • Power plant in Tamil Nadu in partnership with Amplus Energy: 24.3 MW Wind + 28 MWdc Solar, generating 109,798 MWh and reducing approximately 77,957 tCO2e annually.
  • Power plant in Uttar Pradesh in partnership with AmpIn Energy Transition: 12 MWdc Solar, producing 17,880 MWh and reducing around 12,694 tCO2e annually.
  • Power plant in Odisha in partnership with AmpIn Energy Transition: 08 MWdc Solar, generating 12,530 MWh and reducing approximately 8,896 tCO2e annually.

Nxtra by Airtel boasts the largest network of data centers in India with 12 large and 120 edge data centers across the country. The company plans to invest over Rs 5000 crores in the next few years to build six new hyperscale data centers across key metro cities in India and expand its capacity by 2X to over 400 MW.
