In today’s solar photovoltaic (PV) module industry, manufacturers are confronted with a multitude of options for solar cells, connection technologies, encapsulation materials, and processes. The challenge lies in selecting the most efficient, durable, and recyclable PV modules while also catering to the growing demand for customized modules for integrated applications. To address these needs, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has established a state-of-the-art technology evaluation center called Module-TEC, spanning an area of 1,000 square meters.

At the ceremonial opening of Module-TEC, Prof. Andreas Bett, Institute Director at Fraunhofer ISE, emphasized the strategic importance for Germany and the European Union to foster resilience in PV module production and reduce dependence on Chinese suppliers. The center aims to facilitate innovation and support European manufacturers in launching technologically advanced and sustainable PV products into the market.

The Module-TEC team has a track record of success in collaboration with industrial partners. For instance, they worked with teamtechnik to develop a conductive, lead-free, and adhesive solar cell interconnection technology, now sold worldwide. This collaboration also led to the development of the “matrix shingle” concept in partnership with M10 Industries AG, resulting in the establishment of M10 Solar Equipment GmbH. Additionally, Fraunhofer ISE collaborated with Heckert Solar to create a PV module based on large-sized (G12) half cells, reducing material requirements for production.

Prof. Holger Neuhaus, head of the PV Module Technology department at Fraunhofer ISE and Module-TEC facility, highlighted the center’s expanded capabilities to provide faster and more comprehensive support to PV companies. Beyond enhancing PV module performance, the center also aims to promote sustainability in module construction and develop modules for integrated applications such as solar car roofs or building-integrated PV modules.

Module-TEC, in conjunction with the TestLab PV Modules of Fraunhofer ISE, offers unique facilities and expertise for module development, including pre-certification according to IEC standards. Services range from virtual analysis and connection design to prototype construction and long-term stability analyses. With a diverse selection of connection technologies and module materials, the center enables rapid realization of various module concepts to meet market demands effectively.
