Singapore and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have announced the establishment of the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore, marking the agency’s first office outside of its Paris headquarters. Revealed during the IEA’s 50th Anniversary Ministerial in Paris, the centre aims to enhance energy security and accelerate clean energy transitions in Southeast Asia and beyond. Operating from the second half of 2024, the centre will provide policy guidance, technical assistance, and training to facilitate the deployment of renewables and clean energy technologies, cross-border power trade, and improved access to finance for clean energy investments.

Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr Tan See Leng highlighted the strategic significance of the centre, stating, “It will energize the regionโ€™s decarbonization journey while continuing to provide advice on energy security and resilience.” IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol expressed enthusiasm about the milestone, emphasizing the agency’s increased engagement with Southeast Asia. The centre is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the region’s energy transition pathways and strengthening cooperation between Singapore and the IEA.

Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore, Mr Ngiam Shih Chun, noted the milestone’s significance, enhancing cooperation between EMA and IEA. The establishment of the centre follows years of collaboration between Singapore and IEA in areas such as energy efficiency, infrastructure financing, and cross-border power interconnections.

The IEA, founded in 1974 to coordinate responses to oil supply emergencies, has expanded its activities to include comprehensive support for countries pursuing secure and sustainable energy solutions. Since Singapore joined the IEA as an Association country in 2016, both entities have collaborated closely on capacity building and policy exchanges in Southeast Asia, further solidifying their partnership.

This move represents a strategic step for the IEA to deepen its engagement in a dynamic and fast-growing region and underscores Singapore’s role as a key player in the global energy landscape.
