SmartStop Self Storage REIT, Inc. has achieved a milestone in its sustainability journey. Its 50th property in Chula Vista, California now runs on solar power. Since initiating its Solar Initiative in 2020, SmartStop has steadfastly harnessed solar energy to sustainably power its operations. These 50 properties, spanning 12 states, underscore SmartStop’s unwavering commitment to renewable energy across its portfolio.
The integration of solar energy across these properties will yield around 5.7 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, translating to an estimated $900,000 in electricity savings yearly. This substantial output reflects the Company’s commitment to both reducing its carbon footprint and cutting operational costs. “We are thrilled to achieve this milestone in our Solar Initiative program, marking a significant step forward in our continued commitment to sustainability,” said James Barry, CFO of SmartStop. “This accomplishment underscores our dedication to reducing our environmental impact while realizing tangible financial benefits. We look forward to continuing our efforts to integrate renewable energy solutions across our operations.”
In environmental terms, SmartStop’s solar initiative carries significant weight. The energy produced by these solar installations equates to:
- the greenhouse gas emissions from 950 gas-powered vehicles driven for a year,
- the CO2 emissions from the electricity consumption of 788 homes over a year, and
- the emissions avoided by recycling 1,386 tons of waste instead of sending it to landfills.
