The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) anticipates a significant uptick in electricity generation, projecting a 3% increase in 2024 followed by a 1% rise in 2025. Notably, renewable energy sources, particularly solar power, are expected to drive the majority of this growth.
According to the EIA, solar, wind, and hydropower combined will contribute 22% to total U.S. generation in 2024, with a further increase to 24% in 2025. This marks a notable progression from the 21% contribution recorded in 2023.
Specifically, the EIA forecasts a 41% surge in solar electricity generation in 2024 compared to the previous year. Wind generation is predicted to grow by 5% in 2024, with potential fluctuations dependent on wind speeds. Additionally, hydropower generation is expected to increase by 6% in 2024, with significant growth anticipated in the Southeast region.
EIA Administrator Joe DeCarolis emphasized the historic significance of solar energy, noting that in 2025, solar generation is projected to surpass hydropower for the first time in U.S. history.
Other highlights from the May Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) include:
- U.S. Retail Gasoline Prices: EIA forecasts retail gasoline prices to hover around $3.70 per gallon from April through September, similar to prices observed during the same period last year. An upcoming STEO supplement will delve into how refinery operations may impact summer driving season prices.
- Coal Production and Exports: EIA revised its forecasts for U.S. coal production and exports upward, following the closure of the Port of Baltimore. Coal exports are expected to reach 99 million short tons in 2024, a 4% increase from April’s forecast, albeit lower than pre-bridge collapse expectations. Despite an increase in coal production forecasts for 2024, overall production is anticipated to decline by 14% compared to 2023.
- Trans Mountain Pipeline: The recent startup of the Trans Mountain Pipeline is expected to alleviate distribution bottlenecks, supporting a surge in Canada’s liquid fuels production to approximately 6.3 million barrels per day by 2025, a rise of 500,000 barrels per day from current levels.
- New STEO Feature: Global Oil Data Tables: EIA introduces streamlined global oil data tables in this month’s STEO, offering comprehensive insights into OPEC+ production data and world crude oil production separate from other liquid fuels production.
