In a recent development aimed at bolstering sustainable energy practices, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, emphasized that the promotion of rooftop solar power in Vietnam is intended for self-consumption purposes, not for electricity trading. This assertion was made during a regular Government press conference held, following positive contributions to the draft Electricity Law amendment.
At the conference, Deputy Minister Tan addressed inquiries regarding current policies incentivizing rooftop solar installations, particularly concerning the application of zero charges for grid-connected systems. He underscored the importance of Directive No. 20/CT-TTg issued by the Prime Minister, which prioritizes the efficient use of electricity as a crucial measure for maintaining stable energy security and fostering sustainable economic growth.
The national agenda aims to have 50% of office buildings and residential houses equipped with self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power by 2030, serving on-site consumption exclusively, without selling excess electricity to the national grid. This vision aligns with the National Power Development Plan and underscores the priority given to renewable energy sources.
To facilitate this transition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is crafting a Draft Decree outlining mechanisms to encourage rooftop solar development in homes, offices, and industrial parks. The decree aims to define the concept of self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power, streamline procedures, and offer incentives such as exemption from electricity operating licenses and simplified administrative processes.
With these measures, Vietnam aims to not only reduce reliance on the national power grid but also alleviate pressure on the electricity system, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future. The Ministry is currently soliciting feedback on the draft, signaling a proactive approach towards promoting renewable energy adoption across the nation.
