Avangrid, Inc., a major American energy company and part of the Iberdrola Group, announced that its utilities, Central Maine Power (CMP), New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), and United Illuminating (UI) successfully managed the impacts of this weekโs blizzard. Heavy snow and strong winds led to outages across Maine, upstate New York and Connecticut, but the issues were addressed quickly thanks to advance preparation and well-coordinated restoration efforts.
Jose Antonio Miranda, CEO of Avangrid, said the storm highlighted the importance of readiness and strong infrastructure. He noted that teams from CMP, NYSEG and UI acted immediately once conditions worsened, carrying out their storm response plans and restoring service to thousands of customers despite the difficult weather. He explained that the strong performance reflects the hard work of field crews as well as the companyโs ongoing investments in grid resilience, all aimed at ensuring reliable service and quick recovery when severe weather strikes.
Ahead of the storm, CMP positioned extra crews at service centers throughout its Maine territory. When blizzard conditions caused more than 4,900 outages, crews were already in place and able to respond quickly. In Connecticut, UIโs service area faced heavy snowfall and powerful winds. Additional staffing was brought in, allowing UI teams to restore electricity to over 6,000 customers on Monday. NYSEG also strengthened its readiness by pre-staging 40 extra line crews in its Brewster division so they could assist with restoration work as soon as outages occurred.
Customers also recognised the quick response. One resident from Milford, Connecticut shared that he lost power on Monday morning during the height of the storm. Within minutes, a UI truck arrived, removed a tree limb that had fallen on the line and restored power in under an hour. He praised the team for their dedication and efficiency during harsh conditions.
These coordinated efforts ensured that Avangridโs utilities could handle all outages safely and with minimal delay. By preparing crews in advance, working closely with local emergency partners and continuing to invest in stronger and more resilient infrastructure, the company was able to deliver reliable service across every affected region. Avangrid has stated that it will keep improving its grid systems and storm-response capabilities so customers remain supported during future severe weather events.
