His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia, met with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm in Riyadh today to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in various energy fields. This meeting builds on the Partnership for Advancing Clean Energy Agreement signed in Jeddah on July 15, 2022.
The discussions focused on several key areas, including carbon management, clean hydrogen, nuclear energy, electricity and renewables, innovation, energy sector supply chain resilience, and energy efficiency. The Ministers also reviewed Saudi Arabia’s efforts to combat climate change through initiatives like the “Saudi Green Initiative” and the “Middle East Green Initiative,” which are part of the Circular Carbon Economy.
Following the meeting, both Ministers signed a new roadmap for energy cooperation, setting a detailed timeline for collaborative projects under the Partnership Framework for Advancing Clean Energy. This roadmap outlines the implementation of joint initiatives in various energy sectors, emphasizing the exchange of knowledge on policies, standards, and regulatory frameworks, as well as joint research and development in new technologies and human capital development through training and expertise exchange.
The partnership framework includes cooperation in clean energy, clean hydrogen, Circular Carbon Economy, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies, clean cooking solutions, emissions reduction, research and development, and clean electricity generation technologies. It also allows for future collaboration in other areas aligned with both countries’ policies, laws, and international commitments.
This agreement represents a significant step forward in Saudi-U.S. energy relations, aiming to foster innovation and sustainable development in the energy sector.
