The provincial government of Negros Occidental plans to install a total of 1,270 kilowatts (KW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across seven main facilities of the Capitol this year.

Data released by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson on Tuesday indicated that switching to solar power could save the province between 132,080 and 158,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) monthly.

โ€œWe aim to put the project out for bid by the third quarter,โ€ Lacson stated during an interview held in conjunction with the Provincial Renewable Energy Week from May 20 to 24.

Lacson estimated that with the current rate of PHP12 per kWh, the province could save between PHP1.5 million and PHP1.8 million each month.

An energy audit initiated by the governor last year led the province to adopt solar panels this year.

“I urge everyone, particularly our local government units, to adopt similar measures, beginning with grid-tied rooftop solar systems,” he added.

Lacson noted that Negros Occidental faces significant energy challenges, including frequent power outages and rising electricity rates, but emphasized that residents should focus on solutions rather than problems.

โ€œWe can choose to be proactive and solutions-oriented rather than reactive and problem-focused. May this Renewable Energy Week inspire more of us to pursue energy security and a green energy future with vision, hope, and wise strategies,โ€ he said.

Since February, La Carlota City Hall in Negros Occidental has been using a 100-KW solar PV system. Mayor Rex Jalando-on stated that the city is gradually adopting renewable energy to promote energy conservation, cost savings, and environmental protection.

Through the SecuRE Negros campaign, the provincial government is dedicated to securing the energy future of Negros Occidental by harnessing the transformative potential of renewable energy.
