A significant partnership has been established between the incoming COP29 Presidency, Azerbaijan, and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to monitor progress towards ambitious renewable energy and energy efficiency targets set during COP28.

The collaboration was formalized during a meeting between Azerbaijan’s Minister for Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, and IRENAโ€™s Director-General, Francesco La Camera, held on the sidelines of the Baku Energy Week. Both parties have agreed to work closely together and will host a joint launch event at Pre-COP ahead of COP29.

COP28 President, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, had earlier tasked IRENA with the creation of an annual report series dedicated to monitoring progress and providing recommendations on achieving key energy goals outlined in the UAE Consensus, established at COP28.

Minister Parviz Shahbazov expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, โ€œOur cooperation with IRENA will contribute to monitoring the energy results of the COP28 consensus and the promotion of countries’ actions on renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2030. Within COP29, we are pleased to support this process and coordinate our efforts to achieve global energy and climate goals.โ€

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, โ€œTodayโ€™s cooperation between COP29 and IRENA will help ensure we have the continuity required to triple renewables and double efficiency by 2030 โ€“ from Dubai to Baku and beyond.โ€

The new annual tracking report, to be led by IRENA as the official Custodian Agency, will provide the latest data and projections concerning the tripling of renewables and doubling of energy efficiency by 2030. It will offer timely inputs to future COP engagements and will be published annually from 2024 to 2030.

These goals, as outlined in the UAE Consensus, are crucial components of the global response to climate change, aiming to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The collaboration between Azerbaijan and IRENA signifies a commitment to advancing these critical objectives for a sustainable future.
