The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) is preparing to allocate PHP50 million worth of solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) to agrarian reform communities in Ilocos Norte. This initiative aims to assist farmers in reducing production costs and increasing output.
Officials from DAR and Ilocos Norte recently signed a memorandum of agreement at the Governor’s office in the Capitol of this city for the implementation of the DAR’s Climate Resilient Farm Productivity Support (CRFPS) project. The SPIS are expected to lower farmers’ production expenses by approximately 60%, eliminating the need for them to purchase gasoline for their generator sets.
Maria Ana Francisco, Director of DAR-Ilocos Region, emphasized the significance of providing solar irrigation projects to farmers, highlighting that it will significantly reduce electricity expenses for irrigating farmlands.
She reaffirmed DAR’s commitment to prioritizing irrigation as part of its mandate to distribute land to landless farmers and support smallholders in remote agricultural areas. The implementation is slated to begin within three months, benefitting farmers across the 11 municipalities of Ilocos Norte.
