Albanese Government Accelerates Renewable Energy in NT with Landmark $250 Million Deal

The Albanese Government is fast-tracking the delivery of reliable renewable energy in the Northern Territory, having signed a landmark $250 million deal with the Lawler Government as part of the Rewiring the Nation Program.

This investment, through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), will create hundreds of new jobs and upgrade and expand the power grid across the Territory. It will support major transmission projects and strengthen the grid.

The Rewiring the Nation investment will also speed up the rollout of transmission projects across the Territory, with the first wave set to be completed before 2030.

An agreement has also been signed to deploy community-scale solar, rooftop solar, and clean energy technologies, providing up to $500 in annual energy cost savings for consumers unable to install their own rooftop solar, such as hardship customers, renters, and apartment dwellers.

Projects financed under this agreement will enhance the energy mix across the Territory by increasing renewable generation, such as solar and wind, and reducing reliance on fossil fuel power generation.

In addition to priority projects supporting the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System (DKIS), there is potential for projects in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek to receive support as part of the NT’s energy system decarbonisation.

Today’s deal with the Northern Territory Government is another step towards that.
When I visit communities driving this transformation they ask for investment now, rather than in 20 years as proposed by the Opposition. The Albanese Government is getting on with the job of delivering the energy transformation and lowering household power bills with more reliable renewables into our grid.”
