Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Taiwan Fertilizer Co., Ltd. (TFC) to jointly explore the establishment of an ammonia value chain in Taiwan. This initiative supports Taiwan’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The MoU outlines a collaborative pre-feasibility study to evaluate the facilities and economic viability for developing a comprehensive ammonia value chain. This includes the receiving, storage, handling, and delivery of ammonia to power plants, as well as its use as a fuel for power generation. The study aims to create a strong foundation for the ammonia value chain in Taiwan.
Ammonia, composed of hydrogen and nitrogen, is emerging as a clean fuel option due to its efficiency in hydrogen transport and its ability to be combusted without generating CO2 emissions. Establishing a robust ammonia value chain will be instrumental in advancing Taiwan’s carbon-neutral objectives.
In March 2022, Taiwan set a climate target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, emphasizing the reduction of carbon emissions and the adoption of low-carbon fuels. In line with this, TFC is actively promoting blue and green ammonia as alternative fuels. TFC imported Taiwan’s first low-carbon ammonia in June 2023 and established an Ammonia Energy Division in January 2024 to further this goal.
MHI Group is advancing its growth strategy in Energy Transition, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040. The collaboration with TFC aligns with MHI’s commitment to supporting the decarbonization of various industries, including power generation, and contributing to a sustainable, carbon-neutral world.
