India has seen a notable increase in solar energy adoption in recent years, largely due to declining costs and advancements in photovoltaic (PV) technology. As of July 2024, the countryโs installed solar PV capacity has reached 87,207.97 MW, making up over half of its renewable energy capacity, excluding large hydro. In July 2024 alone, India added more than 2.191 GW of solar PV capacity, highlighting its dedication to expanding its renewable energy base. By this time, India had a total renewable installation of over 150 GW, with solar and wind power contributing 89.36% of this total.

A significant development is the reinstatement of the Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules (ALMM) Order by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) effective from April 1, 2024. This measure aims to ensure high-quality and reliable solar installations, particularly for government-sponsored projects.
India’s total renewable capacity, excluding large hydro, now stands at 150.276 GW, with solar and wind power together accounting for nearly 134.283 GW. This underscores Indiaโs prominent role in global renewable energy adoption. Solar energy, in particular, is integral to Indiaโs sustainable development goals and climate change mitigation efforts, offering minimal greenhouse gas emissions and significantly reducing the countryโs carbon footprint.
Ground-mounted solar installations alone contribute 67.52 GW of capacity, with an additional 2.59 GW coming from hybrid solar components. A notable trend is the rise of decentralized power generation through rooftop solar installations, which now total 13.40 GW. These installations on residential, commercial, and industrial rooftops not only enhance energy security but also enable individuals and businesses to support cleaner energy production.
In rural areas with limited electricity access, solar power is proving transformative. Off-grid solutions, such as solar lanterns and microgrids, which total 3.70 GW, are crucial for providing electricity to remote communities and improving their living standards.
Indiaโs success in solar energy is attributed to a blend of government initiatives, technological advancements, and increased awareness of renewable energy benefits. With solar energy representing over 58.03% of Indiaโs total renewable installed capacity, the country has emerged as a global leader in sustainability and the clean energy transition.
