The Electrifying Agriculture (EA) program by PT PLN (Persero) has significantly reduced operational costs for vaname shrimp farming businesses in Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, saving up to Rp15.8 million per month. Additionally, PLNโ€™s Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) service has opened opportunities for these businesses to penetrate the export market.

Sardi, owner of a two-hectare shrimp pond, reported that the PLN EA program reduced his operational costs by 29% monthly, providing green electricity at 33 kiloVolt Ampere (kVA). โ€œThe EA PLN program encourages increased shrimp cultivation and efficient operational costs,โ€ said Sardi.

Before switching to PLNโ€™s green electricity, Sardi experienced two failed harvests due to unstable electricity from generators, affecting shrimp growth. With stable PLN electricity, he optimizes all electrical equipment, maintaining shrimp quality and reducing monthly costs from Rp55 million to Rp39 million.

Sardi highlighted that REC services attract shrimp farmers in Takalar to PLN electricity. The internationally recognized clean energy certification supports farmers in entering the export market, making them optimistic about becoming global economic players.

โ€œPLNโ€™s service is improving, with quick responses to challenges. REC facilitates the sale of New Renewable Energy certificates, boosting our selling value for the international market,โ€ Sardi added.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that the EA program aims to modernize the agricultural sector, providing reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly electricity to increase productivity and operational efficiency. โ€œPLNโ€™s EA program promotes electricity-based production tools for advanced, efficient, and environmentally friendly agriculture,โ€ said Darmawan.

Darmawan explained that REC was designed to supply clean electricity and foster a green economy, aligning with global energy transition efforts. โ€œREC is our answer to the global demand for low-emission electricity in production processes,โ€ he said.

General Manager of PLN Distribution Unit of South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi (UID Sulselrabar), Budiono, expressed hope that the EA program would reach more farmers, enhancing productivity and farmer welfare. โ€œWe aim to strengthen the Indonesian economy and improve the standard of living for farmers, ranchers, and fish farmers with reliable and clean electrical energy,โ€ Budiono stated.

Budiono added that the program seeks to create shared value for the community and environment through electrical technology innovation. By July 2024, the EA Program had 3,350 customers in Sulselrabar, with a total connected power of 188,685 kVA. โ€œThe EA program is a strategic step to boost the economy through the electricity sector,โ€ concluded Budiono.
