At the Municipal Just Energy Transition Conference held at Gallagher Estate, Deputy Minister Narend Singh addressed a distinguished audience, including Ministers, municipal representatives, and members of the media, emphasizing South Africa’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
Singh underscored the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy, citing President Ramaphosa’s description of the country’s energy crisis as an “existential threat” to both the economy and social fabric. He stressed the importance of this transition, not only as an environmental necessity but also as a socio-economic imperative that aims to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality, and create jobs.
“Electricity is the backbone of progress,” Singh stated, highlighting the need for a stable and sufficient energy supply to drive economic growth and promote inclusivity. He acknowledged the historical reliance on coal and the resulting environmental degradation, which underscores the need for a shift to cleaner energy sources.
The Deputy Minister outlined the challenges South Africa faces in this transition, including economic stagnation and the potential job losses in the coal sector. He called for a comprehensive approach that includes innovative financing mechanisms to make renewable energy affordable and accessible to all, especially in low-income communities.
Singh stressed the importance of community participation and ownership in renewable energy projects, ensuring that the benefits of the transition are equitably shared. He called for collaboration across all sectors of society, from government to the private sector and civil society, to achieve the nation’s renewable energy goals.
“Now is the time for us to harness the incredible potential of renewable energy, to innovate, to build, and to grow together,” Singh urged. He emphasized the critical role of local government in implementing policies and regulations, ensuring effective service delivery, and fostering innovation.
As South Africa embarks on this journey towards a just energy transition, Singh reassured the audience of the National Government’s support, led by President Ramaphosa, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s commitment to a sustainable future.
The conference concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to actively participate in building a brighter, greener, and more sustainable future for South Africa.
