Asahi Kasei, a leading Japanese technology company, has announced a new collaboration with De Nora, an Italian multinational renowned for its advancements in sustainable technologies. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop and commercialize small-scale pressurized alkaline water electrolyzers designed for green hydrogen production.
The MOU marks a significant step in leveraging both companies’ extensive expertise. De Nora, a leader in the development of high-performance electrode catalysts and electrolyzers for various industrial processes, will contribute its technical knowledge in electrochemical technologies. Meanwhile, Asahi Kasei brings nearly 50 years of experience in constructing, supplying, and operating chlor-alkali electrolyzers globally.
This partnership aims to address the increasing global demand for green hydrogen as a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels. The Hydrogen Council forecasts a rapid expansion in the installed capacity of water electrolyzers, projecting a cumulative total of around 300 GW by 2030. Asahi Kasei and De Nora’s collaboration will focus on providing compact, cost-effective, and efficient hydrogen production systems, catering to sectors such as mobility and beyond.
Under the agreement, the companies will work together on the technical support, sales, operation, and after-sales service of small-scale containerized electrolyzers with capacities ranging from 1 to 7.5 MW. This initiative is part of Asahi Kasei’s strategy to enhance its portfolio and meet the evolving needs of the hydrogen market.
Kenji Takeda, Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei’s Green Solution Project, emphasized the impact of the collaboration: “Our joint efforts will reduce barriers for customers adopting water electrolysis and significantly contribute to the hydrogen market’s growth. By combining De Nora’s technological prowess with Asahi Kasei’s customer-focused approach, we are poised to advance the development and deployment of these systems.”
Paolo Dellachà, CEO of De Nora, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are excited to work with Asahi Kasei to advance small-scale electrolyzers for green hydrogen. This collaboration represents a major step towards sustainable energy solutions and supports decentralized hydrogen production in key ‘Hydrogen Valleys.’ It will also accelerate production at our new Italian Gigafactory, boosting our capability to meet global demand.”
