Solar Landscape and Walmart announced Walmart’s investment in 74 of Solar Landscape’s community solar projects across Maryland and Illinois. These commercial rooftop projects, currently under construction, are set to go live in 2024 and 2025, delivering nearly 43 megawatts (DC) of solar powerโenough to supply energy to over 3,600 homes.
Around half of the projects aim to reduce energy costs for low- and moderate-income (LMI) households, with total savings projected at $1 million annually for subscribers. Once completed, the 43 MW portfolio will prevent nearly 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to about 40 million pounds of coal burned, according to the EPA.
Additionally, the investment will support job creation, with Solar Landscape estimating that the installation of 43 MW of rooftop solar capacity will require around 342,000 person-hours of work, equal to more than 170 full-time jobs if completed in one year.
โOur investment in this community solar portfolio is aligned with our purpose to help people save money and live better,โ said Frank Palladino, Vice President, Renewable Energy Strategy for Walmart. โOnce operational, these projects will enhance grid infrastructure in dozens of communities in Maryland and Illinois, while expanding access to affordable clean energy and helping thousands of households save money on energy bills.โ
โWalmartโs investment into this community solar portfolio is an important first step in our relationship together and a catalyst for our mission to make solar more accessible and affordable across the country,โ said Clayton Avent, CFO of Solar Landscape. โDeveloping community solar projects on commercial rooftops is the quickest and most efficient way to bring electricity savings to communities. We look forward to increasing access to solar and creating savings for residents surrounding the projects in this portfolio.โ
