HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently welcomed HE Dr. Carel Richter, the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, to Dubai and the Northern Emirates. The purpose of Dr. Richter’s visit was to learn about DEWAโs best practices and its pioneering global projects in the fields of energy, water, and sustainability.
During their meeting, Al Tayer emphasized DEWAโs commitment to building strong partnerships with Dutch companies in both the public and private sectors. He highlighted the importance of implementing high standards and best practices to advance energy efficiency and sustainability in the region.
Al Tayer discussed DEWAโs initiatives that align with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He pointed out DEWAโs focus on innovation and sustainability, which includes ambitious projects designed to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by increasing the use of clean and renewable energy. A key project in this effort is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is recognized as the largest single-site solar park in the world. This project aims to achieve a production capacity of 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
In addition, Al Tayer elaborated on DEWAโs efforts to diversify clean energy sources. This includes integrating various renewable technologies such as solar photovoltaic, concentrated solar power (CSP), and pumped storage at the hydroelectric power plant in Hatta. DEWA has also launched a Green Hydrogen project at the solar park, which is the first pilot of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. This project aims to produce green hydrogen, an important energy source that supports the transition to a net-zero economy and enhances green mobility while reducing carbon emissions.
Al Tayer also highlighted DEWAโs adoption of advanced technologies and digitalization as part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This approach promotes a reliable and efficient infrastructure while accelerating investments in disruptive technologies. DEWA has achieved high standards in the energy and water sectors, ranking at the top in over 12 key performance indicators (KPIs) globally. The authority has surpassed many well-known utilities in Europe and the USA in various competitiveness indicators.
In 2023, DEWA managed to reduce the electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML) in Dubai to just 1.06 minutes, which is the lowest in the world. The losses in electricity transmission and distribution networks were reduced to 2.0%, also the lowest globally. Furthermore, water network losses were recorded at 4.6%, making it the best in the world.
Dr. Richter praised DEWAโs efforts and its significant role in promoting sustainable development in Dubai. He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to explore possible collaborations and strengthen the relationship between the Netherlands and the UAE.
