MPA Completes 780,000 kWh Solar Power System At Singapore’s Marina South Pier

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has completed the installation of a new solar energy generation system at Marina South Pier, strengthening its efforts to increase the use of clean energy across maritime facilities. The project was completed as the pier marks its 20th anniversary.

The new system consists of 1,092 solar photovoltaic panels installed across around 3,200 square metres of rooftop and canopy space. The solar installation is expected to generate up to 780,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity each year. This amount is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 180 four-room Housing & Development Board (HDB) flats.

The solar system will provide a significant share of the electricity required for the daily operations of Marina South Pier. By generating renewable power at the facility, MPA aims to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to Singapore’s public sector solarisation efforts under the GreenGov.SG movement.

The infrastructure has also been designed to support the growing use of electric harbour craft. The solar system and related electrical infrastructure can support both current and future charging requirements for electric harbour vessels operating from the pier. MPA plans to progressively upgrade the electrical systems at the facility to improve the use and distribution of renewable electricity.

The project forms part of MPA’s wider programme to expand clean energy adoption across Singapore’s maritime sector. The authority is also working to replace diesel generators at Pulau Satumu with cleaner energy solutions.

MPA expects Pulau Satumu to be fully powered by renewable energy before the end of next year. The initiatives reflect Singapore’s broader efforts to reduce emissions from maritime operations while supporting the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable port infrastructure.
