TOYO Co., Ltd has unveiled plans to establish a 2 GW solar cell manufacturing facility in Hawassa, Ethiopia, marking a significant expansion in the companyโs global production capabilities. The $60 million project is expected to generate 880 jobs and further position Ethiopia as a key player in the renewable energy sector.
The new facility will tap into Ethiopiaโs robust renewable energy infrastructure, where 90% of the nationโs electricity is sourced from hydropower. This strategic choice of location allows TOYO to align its production processes with environmentally sustainable practices, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy.
In addition to bolstering Ethiopiaโs renewable energy landscape, the facility is set to play a pivotal role in addressing the rising global demand for solar cells. The U.S. solar market, in particular, is poised for substantial growth, with projections indicating 592 GW of solar installations by the end of 2024. TOYOโs new facility in Ethiopia will support this demand while also contributing to the company’s broader goals of scaling up production to meet market needs worldwide.
By establishing this facility in Hawassa, TOYO is also contributing to Ethiopia’s economic development, with 880 jobs created in both high-skill and technical positions. The investment reflects TOYO’s long-term strategy to leverage emerging markets with a strong renewable energy foundation, ensuring sustainable growth while diversifying its manufacturing footprint.
The facility is expected to be operational in the coming years, enhancing TOYO’s capacity to supply high-quality solar cells globally, particularly in key markets such as the United States, Europe, and Asia.
