NTPC has teamed up with the Indian Army to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. This important initiative aims to provide a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for this unique project via video conference, joined by the Chief of India’s defense services, NTPC’s CMD, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army.
Designed to operate independently, this innovative microgrid system will utilize hydrogen as an energy storage medium to deliver 200 kW of continuous power throughout the year. It will replace existing diesel generators at off-grid Army sites, ensuring a sustainable power supply even in harsh winter conditions, where temperatures can drop to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters. NTPC will oversee the project’s maintenance for 25 years, aiming to support Indian soldiers in these strategically critical areas.
The Solar-Hydrogen microgrid will enhance operational efficiency by integrating renewable energy sources, providing reliable power in adverse conditions, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering a cleaner energy ecosystem. These systems combine the reliability of battery storage with the extended energy capabilities of hydrogen, ensuring consistent power supply.
With Ladakh’s high solar irradiance and low temperatures, this project will boost the production and use of green energy, decreasing dependence on fuel logistics and improving self-sufficiency in remote areas prone to connectivity issues. Once operational, it will mark a significant step toward decarbonizing the defense sector in the Himalayan region.
Additionally, NTPC recently initiated a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh as part of its renewable energy goals and commitment to carbon neutrality in Ladakh. The company is also establishing a hydrogen fueling station and solar plant, along with five fuel cell buses for use on intracity routes in Leh.
NTPC is dedicated to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and positioning itself as a leader in green hydrogen technology and energy storage. The company is actively pursuing various decarbonization initiatives, including hydrogen blending, carbon capture, electric buses, and the development of smart NTPC townships.
