Leader Energy Group Berhad has commenced construction of its 100 MW/400 MWh grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion into utility-scale energy storage infrastructure. The project is being developed under Malaysia’s Battery Energy Storage System bidding programme (MyBeST) and is scheduled for commissioning in 2027.
The project is being implemented through Leader Energy Storage Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Leader Energy, and is designed to enhance grid flexibility across Peninsular Malaysia. Once operational, the facility is expected to support renewable energy integration, improve electricity supply-demand management and contribute to greater grid stability as Malaysia expands its clean energy capacity.
The development builds on Leader Energy’s experience in battery storage technology through its 1.45 MWh sodium-sulfur (NAS®) BESS pilot project at the Leader Solar Energy II (LSE II) solar facility in Bukit Selambau, Kedah. The pilot system is integrated with a 20 MWac grid-connected solar photovoltaic plant and demonstrates the potential of energy storage to capture surplus solar electricity and discharge it when required, improving renewable energy utilisation.
The pilot project has also received industry recognition, winning the Renewable Energy Enabler Technology award under the Special Submission category at the Malaysia National Energy Awards 2025. Additionally, it was selected as a finalist in the Energy Storage category at the Enlit Asia Power & Energy Awards 2026.
Commenting on the development, Dato’ Sean H’ng, Executive Deputy Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer of Leader Energy, highlighted that the company’s experience with solar-integrated battery storage has provided valuable operational insights. He stated that the Pajam project represents the next phase of Leader Energy’s expansion into grid-scale storage while supporting Malaysia’s broader energy transition objectives.
He further emphasised the growing importance of battery energy storage systems in managing electricity supply and demand as renewable energy penetration increases. According to the company, storage infrastructure will play an essential role in maintaining grid reliability while enabling greater integration of variable renewable energy sources.
Malaysia’s MyBeST programme, administered by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga), comprises four grid-connected battery energy storage projects, each with a capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh. Together, the projects represent a combined capacity of 400 MW/1,600 MWh, with commissioning scheduled for 2027.
The programme forms part of Malaysia’s broader strategy to strengthen electricity system flexibility, reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based peaking power plants and improve long-term power system efficiency. It also supports the country’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which targets 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050.
For Leader Energy, the groundbreaking represents another milestone in its strategy to develop an integrated renewable energy infrastructure platform combining clean power generation, battery storage and electricity transmission capabilities.
With more than three decades of experience in the power sector, Leader Energy develops, constructs, owns and operates renewable energy generation, energy storage and power transmission assets across Asia. The company’s latest investment in grid-scale battery storage is expected to strengthen its participation in Malaysia’s evolving electricity market while supporting the region’s transition towards a more reliable and lower-carbon energy system.
