Swisspower Renewables Group has officially opened the Prösen solar park in Wainsdorf, southern Brandenburg, Germany, marking another step in the expansion of renewable energy generation in the region. The ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) plant has an installed capacity of 14.5 megawatt-peak (MWp) and is expected to generate approximately 14,900 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually.
The company estimates that the solar park will produce enough electricity to meet the annual consumption needs of around 4,200 households. The project is also expected to avoid approximately 5,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions every year, contributing to regional decarbonisation and Germany’s clean energy transition.
The official opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the municipality of Röderland, owners of the project sites, project partners and companies involved in construction. Swisspower Renewables used the occasion to highlight the project’s role in expanding renewable energy capacity and strengthening its presence in southern Brandenburg.
The Prösen solar park is part of a broader energy park that combines solar and wind power, with battery energy storage planned for the future. Together with the Elsterwerda wind farm, which is also owned by the Swisspower Renewables Group, the solar installation uses the existing grid connection point at the Gröditz substation.
By sharing this grid infrastructure, the projects are expected to make more efficient use of available grid capacity and reduce the costs associated with integrating additional renewable energy projects. The planned combination of wind, solar and battery storage will also support more flexible electricity generation and feed-in.
Swisspower Renewables intends to expand the energy park further in the coming years through the proposed Prösen-Nord expansion project and the installation of a battery energy storage system (BESS). The storage facility is expected to help integrate renewable electricity into the market by making solar power available beyond periods of sunshine and improving the flexibility of the combined energy system.
Lars Hieke, CEO of Swisspower Renewables AG, said the project would support renewable energy expansion and contribute to an affordable energy supply. He also highlighted the importance of battery storage in improving renewable energy integration and supporting the competitiveness of the European economy.
The project is also expected to provide long-term financial benefits to the municipality of Röderland. Under the municipal participation scheme established by Brandenburg’s Special Levy Act (BbgEESG), Swisspower Renewables pays a levy of €2,000 per megawatt of installed capacity. The company bears the levy entirely, providing a direct financial contribution to the local authority.
As part of its regional engagement, Swisspower Renewables also presented donations to the Wainsdorf Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Röderland Schools’ Support Association during the opening ceremony.
With the Prösen solar park now officially opened, Swisspower Renewables is advancing its strategy of combining renewable generation and energy storage while supporting local communities and the wider energy transition.
