The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has received a prestigious five-star SVAGRIHA rating for its Intermodal Terminal (IMT) at Kalughat in Bihar. The terminal, developed under the World Bank-funded Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP), is a key initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity of National Waterway 1 on the River Ganga.
The SVAGRIHA rating, which stands for Simple Versatile Affordable GRIHA, is awarded for environmentally sustainable construction practices. The rating was presented to Shri Arvind Kumar, Director of JMVP, alongside Shri Manish Tiwari, Specialist (Environment Impact Assessment) at JMVP, and Shri J. J. Patel, Project Manager at Sanjay Construction Company.
Kalughat IMT earned its five-star rating for adopting eco-friendly building practices, including the use of recyclable materials such as fibre, recyclable glass, and energy-efficient fixtures. The terminal’s construction adhered to strict GRIHA criteria covering site planning, sustainable building materials, energy optimization, and waste management. Additionally, the terminal incorporates renewable energy and a sewage treatment plant for water recycling.
With a cost of ₹82.48 crore and an annual capacity of 77,000 TEU, the IMT is crucial for cargo transport in North Bihar and offers connectivity to Nepal for EXIM cargo. The terminal aligns with India’s vision for sustainable infrastructure development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
