Masdar, the UAE’s leading clean energy firm, has signed a Framework for Action (FFA) agreement with TotalEnergies and EPointZero, the decarbonization arm of 2PointZero, to accelerate clean energy access in emerging markets across Africa and Asia.
The agreement, signed during the UAE-France High-Level Business Council’s third plenary meeting in Paris on February 16, 2025, follows discussions between UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders reaffirmed their strategic partnership and explored collaborations in climate action, energy, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology.
Under the agreement, Masdar and TotalEnergies will collaborate to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to local communities in Africa, supporting long-term energy transformation. Additionally, the companies will jointly explore new clean energy opportunities in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies and EPointZero will focus on supporting India’s renewable energy ambitions, including solar, wind, and energy storage, contributing to the country’s decarbonization efforts.
The signing ceremony was attended by UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Masdar Chairman, H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, along with TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, and Group CEO of 2PointZero, H.E. Mariam Almheiri. The agreement was officially signed by Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, TotalEnergies President for Gas Renewable and Power, Stéphane Michel, and Chief Strategy and Growth Officer of IHC, Peter Abraam.
Strengthening UAE-France Energy Ties
The partnership builds on the UAE and France’s Comprehensive Strategic Energy Partnership established in 2022 and aligns with their Bilateral Climate Investment Platform launched last year. The UAE-France High-Level Business Council, inaugurated in July 2022, plays a crucial role in facilitating economic exchanges and fostering joint investment projects in clean energy and sustainable development.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi emphasized that the agreement underscores the UAE-France partnership and reflects a shared commitment to clean energy expansion, socio-economic development, and sustainable progress in developing regions.
TotalEnergies President Stéphane Michel highlighted the company’s 80-year partnership with Abu Dhabi in the oil and gas sector and expressed enthusiasm for extending this collaboration to renewable energy projects in Asia and Africa.
H.E. Mariam Almheiri, Group CEO of 2PointZero, stressed the agreement’s significance in scaling up renewables and energy storage, ensuring sustainable power access for millions, and accelerating global decarbonization efforts.
