UAE-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power has commenced construction on a 50MW solar power plant in Gontougo, northeastern Ivory Coast. The project, being developed through its subsidiary AMEA Gontougo, is backed by Dutch investor FMO and German investor DEG, who have committed a combined investment of $60 million.
The Bondoukou solar plant is expected to be commissioned later this year, marking a major milestone in Ivory Coastโs renewable energy sector. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais emphasized the significance of the project. โThe 50MW solar plant is a landmark achievement for Ivory Coast and a testament to AMEA Powerโs dedication to delivering clean energy solutions across Africa,โ he stated. โThis groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes our strong partnership with the government and the people of Ivory Coast on this transformative journey.โ
This initiative marks AMEA Powerโs first project in Ivory Coast and aligns with the nationโs efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity. Ivory Coast has seen its solar energy output grow from 13MW in 2021 to 46MW by the end of 2023, as part of its strategy to reach 45% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030.
In addition to the Bondoukou plant, AMEA Power is advancing a second 50MW solar project in the country, reinforcing its commitment to supporting Ivory Coastโs renewable energy ambitions. With natural gas currently dominating the countryโs electricity generation, these solar initiatives play a crucial role in diversifying the energy mix and meeting government renewable energy targets.
