India is making significant progress in green hydrogen production and utilization, aiming to become a global leader in this emerging sector. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the country’s efforts at the flag-off ceremony for India’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials in New Delhi. He emphasized that the National Green Hydrogen Mission is a major step toward energy independence and sustainability.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is at the forefront of the global green energy transition. The government has allocated ₹19,744 crore to support green hydrogen initiatives, focusing on production, storage, and application across multiple industries. The country has already achieved significant milestones, including awarding 4,12,000 TPA of green hydrogen production capacity and approving 3 GW of electrolyzer manufacturing capacity per year. Additionally, seven pilot projects have been launched in transportation, shipping, steel, and storage, along with the publication of 88 safety and scalability standards.
Looking ahead, India has set ambitious targets for 2030. The country aims to produce 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually, install 60-100 GW of electrolyzer capacity, and add 125 GW of renewable energy capacity dedicated to hydrogen production. These initiatives are expected to reduce 50 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year, save ₹1 lakh crore in imports, and attract ₹8 lakh crore in investments.
The introduction of hydrogen-powered truck trials marks a significant shift in India’s mobility sector, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and enhancing energy security. India is currently the third-largest oil consumer and the fourth-largest crude oil importer, making hydrogen technology a crucial alternative. The initial fleet of three hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks will operate on routes connecting Faridabad–Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad–Surat–Vadodara. To support this transition, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is setting up hydrogen refueling stations in Faridabad, Vadodara, Pune, and Balasore.
Shri Pralhad Joshi also acknowledged the efforts of Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari in promoting hydrogen-powered mobility and driving innovation in the sector. He encouraged industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to collaborate in advancing India’s green hydrogen economy.
The Minister called upon all stakeholders to support India’s transition toward clean energy, emphasizing that hydrogen will play a vital role in shaping the country’s energy future. The continued development of green hydrogen technology is expected to strengthen India’s energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and establish the nation as a key player in the global renewable energy market.
