In a strategic step towards sustainable industrial operations, JSL Super Steel, a subsidiary of Jindal Stainless Limited, has entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sunsure Energy to procure 11 MWp of solar energy. The clean power will be sourced from Sunsure’s 49 MWp solar facility located in Augasi, Uttar Pradesh.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in JSL Super Steel’s efforts to transition to renewable energy, with the solar power expected to replace nearly 40% of the conventional energy consumption at its Ghaziabad facility. The initiative falls under the Uttar Pradesh State Power Banking Policy, aligning with the state’s commitment to improving energy security and promoting sustainable energy management.

The partnership is expected to deliver 16.5 million units (MUs) of solar power annually, enabling JSL Super Steel to avoid approximately 12 million kilograms of carbon emissions each year. This reduction in emissions equates to the environmental benefit of planting over 545,000 trees, underlining the project’s strong ecological impact.

As India accelerates its push towards green steel production—a movement gaining traction in the country’s energy-intensive metal sector—this collaboration sets a benchmark for integrating renewables into industrial operations. JSL Super Steel’s move supports the broader sustainability goals of its parent company, Jindal Stainless, which has already reduced over 310,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over the past three years and aims for Net Zero emissions by 2050.

The company has also pioneered the use of green hydrogen in stainless steel manufacturing and plans to invest INR 700 crore over the next five years in decarbonization initiatives. For Sunsure Energy, this agreement reinforces its role as a leading renewable energy provider, now serving over 70 industrial clients across 16 Indian states, with 160 MW of operational capacity in Uttar Pradesh alone.
