Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy & Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Shri Pralhad Joshi, visited Greenko’s landmark Integrated Renewable Energy Project in Pinnapuram, Andhra Pradesh, on Friday, commending the project’s unprecedented scale and pace of development. This globally pioneering initiative, described as the world’s first and largest gigawatt-scale integrated renewable energy project, combines 4,000 MW of solar generation, 1,000 MW of wind capacity, and 1,680 MW of pumped hydropower storage to provide round-the-clock, carbon-free energy.

The project is designed with a daily storage capacity of 10,080 MWh in a single cycle, enabling dispatchable power that supports industrial sectors such as green steel, green aluminum, and green hydrogen production. During his visit, the Union Minister conducted an aerial tour and inspected key infrastructure elements, highlighting the project’s role in advancing India’s energy independence and sustainability objectives. He noted that once fully operational, the project will help avoid approximately 3.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Beyond its significant emissions reduction, the project represents a critical step toward solving one of renewable energy’s major limitations—intermittency. By integrating large-scale storage with generation assets, the Pinnapuram facility is poised to deliver reliable, clean electricity on demand, aligning with India’s “One Nation, One Grid” policy.

The visit also included a presentation on Greenko’s Intelligent Renewable Energy (RE) Cloud Storage Platform. The platform enables real-time energy balancing, ensuring that renewable power is available when and where it is needed. This technological innovation not only supports domestic energy needs but also contributes to global decarbonization efforts by enabling the production of low-cost green molecules for international markets.

The Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, stated, “Witnessing an Integrated Renewable Energy Storage Project at Pinnapuram in action — the world’s first and largest of its kind, right here in our country is a matter of pride and a shining example of India’s green energy potential under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I commend the Government of Andhra Pradesh, under Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu ji, for its progressive policies that have made this pioneering effort possible.”

Mr. Anil Chalamalasetty, Group CEO & MD of Greenko, said in a statement, “Led a detailed tour showcasing the project’s key features and benefits. This groundbreaking initiative, which combines solar, wind, and pumped storage power, will make a vital contribution to global efforts to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries. Mr. Anil expressed that this rapidly progressing project, once completed, would drive economic growth in the region, foster the development of ancillary industries, and create employment opportunities.”

The total investment in the Pinnapuram project stands at USD 4.2 billion — with USD 1.2 billion allocated for the pumped storage component and USD 3 billion for the solar and wind infrastructure. The project reinforces India’s leadership in clean energy innovation and demonstrates how large-scale, integrated renewable systems can power industrial growth while supporting climate goals. Greenko’s ongoing development of similar pumped hydro storage projects nationwide further underlines its commitment to building over 100 GWh of cloud storage capacity, bolstering India’s renewable energy infrastructure.
