RWE, the third-largest renewable energy company in the United States, has officially commissioned its first project in KentuckyโAshwood Solar, an 86 MW solar facility located in Lyon County. The project was originally developed through a joint venture between Open Road Renewables and Eolian, L.P., and is now operational under RWEโs leadership. Ashwood Solar is expected to generate enough electricity to power over 15,000 households served by the Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency (KYMEA). By supplying locally generated clean energy, the project supports regional energy independence and contributes to economic development in the area.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the site marked the commissioning of the project, with participation from RWE executives, KYMEA leadership, board members, local government officials, and community organizations. The event celebrated the successful completion of the facility and its role in strengthening Kentuckyโs renewable energy infrastructure.
Andrew Flanagan, Chief Executive Officer, RWE Clean Energy, said in a statement, “RWE is proud to add to the growing energy mix in the commonwealth with our first operational solar project in the state. By partnering with KYMEA, Ashwood Solar is helping the Bluegrass State ensure energy security while also providing local jobs and boosting the Kentucky economy.”
Doug Buresh, President & Chief Executive Officer, KYMEA, also added, “The commissioning of Ashwood Solar marks a proud milestone for KYMEA and our member communities. This project reflects our long-term commitment to delivering clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy to the people of Kentucky. Our 20-year partnership with RWE ensures that our members benefit from homegrown solar power while supporting local economic development and environmental stewardship. We are excited to see this vision come to life in Lyon County and look forward to the positive impact it will have for decades to come.โ
The project operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with KYMEA, reinforcing the long-term commitment of both organizations to reliable, sustainable energy for the region. With this addition, RWE expands its presence in the U.S. market, where it currently manages over 11 GW of energy assets. Ashwood Solar is part of RWEโs broader strategy to meet growing national energy demands through regionally diverse and strategically located renewable energy projects. The companyโs expanding U.S. portfolio highlights its focus on delivering homegrown, clean energy solutions to meet the evolving needs of communities and utilities across the country.
