The University of California (Berkeley) recently conducted research based at the India Energy and Climate Centre. It stated that the power cuts in the country will increase by 2027 as the country’s electricity demand is growing, and we will not be able to immediately cater to this increased demand. Interestingly, in 2023 India’s demand for electricity grew by 7% when the global average was just 2.2%. This will lead to more power cuts as the systems will not be able to bear the increased demand.
In parallel, the digital terrain around us has also changed rapidly, requiring uninterrupted electricity to work smoothly. Thus, uninterrupted, unfluctuating quality power is not just a luxury but more of a necessity. While online connectivity requires electricity as a priority, e-commerce too relies heavily on electricity. For mission-critical infrastructure such as healthcare, even a moment’s power outage can lead to huge operational and financial losses and loss of life.
Power backup solutions will be in higher demand in the future, but they too will need to cater to the needs of domestic and commercial spaces, as both places are now highly dependent on electricity. While these power backup systems have evolved manifold in the past few decades, it has only been possible due to the fast-track advancement in semiconductor and electronics technology. It has helped develop power backup systems that are more intelligent, efficient, resilient and capable of catering to the needs of the present and future.
From simple systems that provide temporary emergency power to complex solutions that integrate with smart grids and renewable energy, power backup technology has advanced dramatically. Modern systems use developments in battery technology, renewable energy integration, and smart grid technologies to increase efficiency and dependability, whereas early systems relied on basic chemical and mechanical principles.
India now has some of the best OEMs that can play a major role in this transformation. With a focus on eliminating single points of failure, continuous monitoring of equipment performance and optimising systems is the key. In a country like India, where the power supply is inconsistent and also faces the challenge of environmental conditions, it is critical to lay a system that is not impacted by variable airflow or high temperatures. The power backup solutions need to adapt cooling designs supported by robust engineering.
Another interesting evolution that has been observed is the shift from heavy-duty Diesel Generators (DGs) to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). BESS are a major milestone when it comes to efficient and sustainable backup solutions, as they reduce carbon emissions. Moreover, they have a faster response time, quieter operation, and are low maintenance. The Made in India solutions are the flag bearers of local innovation and the country’s manufacturing excellence. This has only been possible due to the usage of best-in-class, proven components that are highly reliable and efficient. Indian power backup solutions built on stringent manufacturing standards and backed by a robust design philosophy are ready to compete globally, and they are already becoming the preferred choice for their quality.
The dependency on electronic gadgets and electricity in industries and at homes, along with the increasing population, will ensure that this demand for reliable power backup solutions will rise steadily. However, we will need to make sure that these solutions are smarter and greener, thereby not impacting the planet negatively. Only when we care about the planet can we say that we can live in a future that is truly ours.
