Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower), through East Asia Utilities Corporation (EAUC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Therma Power, Inc., is set to break ground on a 30-megawatt (MW) hybrid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) within the Mactan Economic Zone, Cebu. This strategic initiative aims to enhance grid stability in the rapidly growing Visayas region.
Slated for commissioning in the first half of 2026, the facility will be among the first large-scale energy storage systems in Central Visayas. It is designed to boost the reliability of the local power supply, addressing the increasing demand from businesses, industries, and new investors in the area.
The hybrid BESS will function as an ancillary service—storing excess energy and discharging it when needed to help balance the grid. This capability supports power quality and reliability, which is especially vital as the Philippines expands its use of variable renewable energy sources. The Energy Regulatory Commission has underscored the importance of such ancillary services in ensuring a smooth and stable energy transition.
“This project will allow us to respond to imbalances in real-time, helping the grid absorb fluctuations and minimize disruptions,” explained AboitizPower Transition Business Group Chief Operating Officer for Operated Assets Aldo Ramos.
“EAUC has consistently proven its ability to provide crucial ancillary reserves to the Luzon and Visayas grid when needed. The integration of BESS with our existing facility will materially enhance this capability, enabling faster and more efficient responses,” he added.
