Telangana is set to embark on a significant overhaul of its power sector, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announcing a series of reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, financial stability, and sustainability. In a recent high-level review meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and energy department officials, the Chief Minister directed the establishment of a third power distribution company (DISCOM) in the state.
This new DISCOM will operate alongside the existing Telangana State Southern and Northern Power Distribution Companies and will primarily oversee key welfare schemes such as free power supply for agricultural users, 200 units of free electricity for economically disadvantaged households, and free power to government-run schools and colleges. By consolidating these schemes under a dedicated entity, the government aims to streamline operations and improve service delivery.
The reforms also target the growing financial strain on power utilities, driven by high-interest loans. The Chief Minister instructed officials to devise an action plan for loan restructuring to lower interest burdens, thus improving the fiscal health and national ratings of the state’s power companies.
In a strong push towards sustainable energy, the state plans to integrate solar power across government infrastructure. Officials have been directed to install rooftop solar systems in schools, colleges, and government offices. District Collectors will be tasked with identifying viable sites to fast-track implementation.
These reforms mark Telangana’s commitment to building a robust, financially sound, and clean energy-powered future.
