SD Guthrie Berhad (Guthrie) has signed a collaboration agreement with Gamuda Energy Sdn Bhd (Gamuda) to jointly develop, own, and operate solar power projectsโincluding energy storage systemsโwith a combined target capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW).
The partnership combines Guthrieโs extensive land bank across Malaysia with Gamudaโs technical expertise and a renewable energy (RE) pipeline exceeding 3GW across the Asia Pacific. Together, the companies aim to meet the growing demand for renewable energy from high-quality offtakers, particularly industrial and data centre operators seeking scalable, fast-tracked clean power solutions.
โRenewable energy is one of two new business verticals that we have identified as a pillar of Guthrieโs future,โ said Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, Group Managing Director of Guthrie. โIt is critical both as a sustainable revenue stream and in supporting our net-zero ambitions. At the national level, it advances Malaysiaโs push to decarbonise its electricity sector.โ
Guthrieโs first solar project under the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP)โa 15MW plant in Bukit Selarong, Kedahโis scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2025. The new partnership, Helmy added, will create value by supplying renewable energy under frameworks such as the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), while enhancing the long-term value of Guthrieโs land portfolio.
Gamuda, which has delivered large-scale solar farms in Malaysia and overseas, said the collaboration strengthens its renewable infrastructure portfolio, which spans solar, wind, hydro, pumped hydro, battery storage, and transmission projects. โOur joint venture with Guthrie, which owns the largest nationwide landbank for RE deployment, uniquely positions us to deliver renewable energy solutions at scale,โ the company noted, citing its partnerships and stake in ERS Energy as additional strengths.
In the first phase of the collaboration, Guthrie and Gamuda will identify underutilised land assets suitable for solar power development.
