Maharashtra has taken an important step toward expanding clean and sustainable energy by signing a major agreement that could shape the stateโ€™s future power landscape. The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Mumbai to work together on developing a nuclear power generation project in the state. The agreement was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who described it as a historic milestone for Maharashtraโ€™s clean energy journey.

Chief Minister Fadnavis said the agreement reflects the central governmentโ€™s effort to involve states more actively in nuclear power generation. This marks the first time that MAHAGENCO will partner with NPCIL on such a project, breaking the long-standing tradition where the nuclear energy sector was solely controlled by the Central Government. The Chief Minister highlighted that this collaboration gives Maharashtra an opportunity to participate directly in a sector that is becoming essential for sustainable development.

He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s vision of โ€œClean Energyโ€”Capable Nationโ€ and said this vision has encouraged greater state involvement in nuclear energy. According to him, clean power is not just an environmental requirement but also a key factor in Maharashtraโ€™s economic goals. He explained that data centers rely heavily on clean energy, and Maharashtra has already emerged as the data center hub of India. With nearly 50โ€“60 percent of the countryโ€™s data center capacity located in the state, the demand for reliable and clean power is rapidly increasing. The Chief Minister said this nuclear energy partnership is extremely important for supporting this growth, and he expressed confidence that Maharashtra would benefit from NPCILโ€™s strong experience in the sector. He assured that the state government will take the lead and extend full cooperation for the successful implementation of the project.

The press release also gave an overview of Indiaโ€™s current nuclear power capacity. The country operates 25 reactors at seven sites, totaling an installed capacity of 8,880 megawatts. Eight more reactors are under construction, including a 500 megawatt Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor. In addition to this, ten new reactors with a combined capacity of 7,000 megawatts are planned. The Central Government has allocated โ‚น20,000 crore for the development of Small Modular Reactors, which could play an important role in the future of nuclear energy in India.

The government expects a sharp rise in power demand by 2047. This demand will be driven by rapid growth in industrial sectors such as steel, cement, and aluminum. Nuclear plants are considered suitable for this type of growth because they operate as baseload power stations. They run continuously with high efficiency and have fewer interruptions compared to other power sources. According to the press release, using nuclear energy will help support Maharashtraโ€™s aim of maintaining a round-the-clock electricity supply. This is especially important for industries that need a steady and reliable power source. The move is expected to help strengthen Maharashtraโ€™s industrial development in the coming years.

The signing ceremony was attended by officials from both organizations, marking the beginning of a long-term partnership aimed at strengthening the stateโ€™s clean energy capacity.
