ACCIONA Energía will develop two new solar power plants in Sicily after securing 151 MW of capacity in Italy’s latest FERX renewable energy auction. The projects, named Panbianco and Benante, will have capacities of 100.8 MWp and 50.2 MWp respectively, and will be built in the municipality of Lentini in the province of Siracusa.

Construction of both plants is scheduled to begin in 2026, with commercial operations targeted for the end of 2027. Once operational, the two facilities are expected to generate around 277.5 GWh of electricity each year. This output will be sufficient to meet the energy needs of more than 55,000 people and will help avoid over 125,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The emissions reduction is comparable to removing nearly 50,000 conventional vehicles from circulation.

The FERX scheme is Italy’s long-term Contracts for Difference (CfD) mechanism, created to support the expansion of renewable energy by offering price stability for 20-year periods. This structure encourages investment while helping the country advance its decarbonization and clean energy targets.

ACCIONA has been active in Italy for more than 25 years, particularly in the water and construction sectors. Its portfolio in the country includes significant infrastructure projects such as parts of the Apulia sanitation system, the Fuente Presidiana drinking water treatment plant, and the breakwater at the Port of Ravenna. In the renewable energy sector, ACCIONA Energía currently operates 156 MW across four wind farms located in Abruzzo, Calabria, and Sicily.
